This test is to diagnose genital infection with herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV1/ HSV2).
It is important to find out if you have HSV1 or HSV2 as HSV2 will lead to more frequent outbreaks than HSV1.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 also increases the risk of acquiring HIV. PCR has been shown in “ACOG Committee on Practice Bulletins Gynecology. ACOG practice bulletin” to be 1.5 to 4 times more sensitive than viral culture in detecting HSV infection.
A positive HSV2 result should be followed up with a HIV test
